Texas freezes and I make a new Fuji film sim recipe - TexasOrwo Color

Winter in Texas is generally one of the most boring times as a landscape and nature photographer. Everything is a narrow gradient of brown and yellow. The light always seems to be simultaneously harsh and low contrast. It is an amazingly uninspiring times to do photography down here.

One of the ways I combat creative lull times like these is to experiment. One aspect of Fuji cameras that I don’t take advantage of nearly as often as I should are the film simulations. They’re actually quite phenomenal, and I decided during the bland winter months I would experiment with SOOC film sims once again.

So I set to creating a recipe. I have two recipes that I really like that live on the custom dial of my X-S10. Both are based off recipes from Fuji X Weekly, one being a Fujifilm Superia simulation and the other I cannot recall. This leaves me with two other custom settings channels that I can play with.

The inspiration for this sim is the mid-70s European TV and movie vibe of OrwoColor. I used FilmColors.org samples as a basis. I cranked the contrast, cooled the temperature and added green. Just as I was finishing this up, our (now seemingly) annual three day winter freeze landed and gave me the opportunity to take some fun snow and ice shots.

Everything was shot with either a Tamron Adaptall 2 SP 80mm f/2.8 or a Fujifilm XF23mm f/1.4 (old version).

After the freeze had unfroze, I was able to capture some pictures with this recipe and my Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens + Fringer EF-FX Pro II adapter. This time around the lighting was much more pleasant, and it gave me an idea of how this film sim can perform on a beautifully sunny day. Overall I’m quite liking the recipe. I might tweak the contrast some, but I also might just start a new recipe instead since this one is pretty solid as is.
